The 1800’s encompassed a vast change in the United States. From civil war to a mass immigration across the country the people of the United States dealt with a changing environment. The start of the industrial revolution took place in the later part of the 1800’s.
Slave holders used a variety of techniques to enslave the blacks into bondage. Not all the states in the Union agreed with slavery and so started the Civil War.
The Civil War pitted family against family and tore our nation apart at the seams. Not only were lives lost and families ruined but a way of life was put to death.
Train travel changed the way we travel and opened up the west to settlement. When the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific railroads joined lines it connected the West Coast and East Coast in a way that led the Nation to expansion. The fall out of the expansion was the Indian Nations. Because white man wanted more land to settle the Government kept breaking treaties it had made with the Tribes. This created a backwater war fought by unequal sides with the outcome of loss of property and dignity for the American Indians.
The birth of the industrial revolution brought many changes to the United States. Americans invented many new things that set the tone for the years to come. Items such as the telephone, the movie camera and light bulbs changed the way people lived. It also created a need for cheaper labor. This brought into light child labor and immigrant labor. The promise of 1776 that all men are created equal was not the case in the late 1800’s. Segregation was rampant, women did not have rights and there was a huge gulf between the rich and the poor. Working conditions were terrible and many workers died because of it. Unions started forming and that brought about its own set of problems and fights. By the end of the century immigration from other countries was fueling the industrial revolution to great heights.
